Get the client

You need World of Warcraft 3.3.5a, build 12340. Nothing else works — not Classic, not a retail install, not a different WotLK build. Already have a copy? Check the bottom-left of its login screen for 3.3.5a (12340) and skip to step 2.

Otherwise grab the torrent. Open it in qBittorrent, Deluge, Transmission, or whatever you use.

Untick the languages you don't need

This build ships five language packs and you only need one. Before you start the download, expand the data folder in your torrent client's file list and untick the ones you won't use — that's 10.7 GB you never download.

Keep exactly one language folder. Untick all five and the game will not launch — it needs its locale data. If you keep a language other than English, remember which one: you'll need that folder's name in step 3.

Leave everything else ticked. The .mpq files in data are the game itself and are not optional. English-only comes to roughly 27 GB.

Create your account

Go to wow.prodigalpros.com and fill in the form. You'll need the invite code from whoever invited you.

No email, no confirmation link. The account exists the moment you submit it.

Passwords max out at 16 characters. The 2009 login box silently cuts off anything longer, so a 20-character password would be stored correctly and then never let you in. Keep it to 16 or fewer.
Case doesn't matter. The game uppercases your username and password before checking them, so Frostmourne and frostmourne are the same login. Don't count on capitals for strength — use length instead.

Point the client at the realm

This is the part everyone gets stuck on. In your WoW folder, open:

data\enus\realmlist.wtf

Replace everything in that file with one line, then save:

set realmlist wow.prodigalpros.com
The file is often set to read-only and your edit will appear to save but won't stick. In Windows: right-click the file → Properties → untick Read-only → OK. Make your edit, then tick it again — that flag is what stops the game overwriting your realmlist later.
  • If you kept a language other than English in step 1, use that folder instead — dede, eses, frfr or ruru. If several are present, put the same line in each one.
  • Close the game before editing. It rewrites these files when it exits.

Launch and log in

Run Wow.exe directly — not a launcher or patcher, which can reset your realmlist on the way past.

Enter your username and password, pick AzerothCore from the realm list, and create a character.

All of Wrath is open. Every race and class, Northrend, and Death Knights are available from the start.

Fix the resolution, if it looks wrong

Easiest inside the game: Esc → System → Graphics, set your resolution, apply.

If the game won't start at a usable size, edit WTF\Config.wtf with the game closed and set:

SET gxResolution "1920x1080"
SET gxWindow "0"

gxWindow is 0 for fullscreen, 1 for windowed.

When it doesn't work

"Unable to connect"

Your realmlist didn't take. Reopen realmlist.wtf and confirm the line is still there — if it reverted, the read-only flag in step 3 is the fix. Also check WTF\Config.wtf for a SET realmList line, which overrides it.

"Account name or password incorrect"

Almost always a password longer than 16 characters being truncated by the client. Ask for a reset with a shorter one. Capitals are never the problem — the game ignores case.

Realm list is empty, or the realm shows offline

You reached the server but the world isn't up. Nothing you can fix from your end — tell the admin.

Stuck on "Connecting" or "Authenticating"

Something between you and the realm is blocking it. Try a different network — some university, office, and hotel connections block the ports the game uses.

"This version is out of date" / wrong build

Your client isn't 3.3.5a build 12340. Go back to step 1 — no realmlist edit will fix a version mismatch.
